Body image for me (as well as most other people, as far as I’m concerning) has been a challenging issue. I spent my high school years working as a model for many local and national companies—my body is what sold. I specifically remember one instance in which I was modeling for a gymnastics company. When the photos came out, no one (including myself) recognized me! The photo shopping was extensive, even on a young girl!
The speaker hit very close to home for me. I have struggled with body image issues, likely because of my past modeling experience. I was amazed to learn that although I feel larger than the average woman, I am actually SMALLER! The media definitely distorts our views of what we “should” or “should” not look like. The speaker also gave a demonstration in which you lie on the ground and guess your width, then compare it to your actual body. After trying this at home, I was amazed to discover that I, like the volunteers in class, was way off and thought I was much larger than I was. I completely agree with how awful media is to the average person’s self-esteem.
Some things I did not agree with the speaker on were some methods for maintaining a healthy body and body image. She said that three meals a day and doing only exercises you enjoy are key. I disagree! Personally, I stay healthier when I eat smaller meals, but more frequently. I also hate running, but found that by forcing myself to run sometimes, I liked running more and I was in better shape. Running makes my body feel great!
The guest speaker really gave me a new perspective on how we all see ourselves. We underestimate the worth and perfection of our incredible bodies. I was especially saddened to hear about how poor body image even affects young girls my sister’s age. I think positive body image begins at home and continues on with those we associate with. I hope to associate with those that lift me (and themselves) up and promote great self-confidence and body image!
