Purpose: To determine whether styles are trending forward (into fashion acceptance) or backward (out of fashion acceptance). 

 

            To conduct a fashion count, follow these steps. 

 

1. Identify

• Which clothing item along with the design details you are going to count, for example, jean styles (legs, pockets, stitching, rise, color, wash, etc.); a category of jewelry such as necklaces (base metal, bead size, color, closure, length, number of strands, etc.)

• Where you will count, for example, some area of a college campus, a mall, a church, or an office building.

19 women wearing light wash jeans... 29%

22 women wearing dark wash jeans... 33%

25 women wearing color jeans... 38%

 

• Analyze your data and discuss your results with the class

 

The largest number of women observed were wearing colored jeans, but only by a small margin. This is likely due to the fact the more washes and colors fit into this category. Most people wearing colored jeans were wearing black jeans, a popular color in winter fashion. After black, white jeans were the second most popular color in the category of colored jeans. Very few other colors were observed.

 

The next highest category, dark wash jeans, similarly correlates with the winter season. When in came to dark wash jeans, many observed pairs featured light stitching. 

 

The final category with the fewest observations was light wash jeans. 19 of the 66 observed women were wearing light wash jeans. Again, this likely could be because of the dark, wintery time of year. Light wash jeans are typically worn more in the summer months.

 

Of all the observed pairs of jeans, the most popular style, by far, was skinny. Only two pairs were not skinny jeans. 

 

• Conclusion: What did you learn about which direction the fashion item you selected is trending?

 

As of now (during the winter season at least), dark wash jeans and colors are in style. Light wash may be on the decline though it would not be suprising to see in incline in light wash denim popularity come warmer months. Considering the wide variety of colors in the "color" category, dark wash denim may be the most popular wash right now.
